Earth Day 2019: American Rapper Lil Dicky Shows His Love For Our Planet Though New Song Titled 'Earth'

         

As of April 19th, 2019, American rapper and comedian, Lil Dicky, released a new song about his love and appreciation for our planet. The song, suitably named 'Earth,' described all of the beauty the Earth has to offer for us, and touches upon some serious social issues we have today in our society, such as gun violence and pollution. Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Shawn Mendes, and Wiz Khalifa were just a few of the thirty celebrities who collaborated together on this song, each contributing their own verses. Following the announcement of the song, the rapper also released a well-animated music video, which caught the attention of millions of fans all over social media. The song is currently number five on the iTunes Charts and continues to grow in popularity as the day goes on. 

Initially, as I saw the first teasers for the song around a week ago, I was intrigued by the video announcements of the collaboration. There had not been much context as to what the song was about, but the trailer included the names of some very influential celebrities and the word "Earth," which I believe was enough to catch my attention. These initial videos made a huge impact when it came to marketing the song, as people all over my Instagram feed began posting and reposting the teasers, which ultimately spread word of this new "Epic collaboration."

The music video for 'Earth' has been drawing attention from all audiences, and is what I believe to be giving the song the majority of its publicity. The video's beautiful animation, along with its humorous lyrics and easily recognizable stars, has seemed to appeal well to the majority of its viewers, considering it currently has over 2.4 million likes and over 26 million views. I have seen many reactions to the music video, were audience members have said that it resembled a movie trailer. Others have commented on the video's social commentary and have made lyrics such as, "All these shootings, pollution, we under attack on ourselves," well known by their followers. In a recent interview, Lil Dicky had stated that this video in particular is what he believes is his "Life's Most Important Work." The artist also stated that all of the song's proceeds will go directly to the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, which supports innovative projects that protect vulnerable wildlife from extinction, while restoring balance to threatened ecosystems and communities. 

Lil Dicky, and all of the many artists involved, have done an excellent job marketing the song and growing its publicity. I believe that people who have such a heavy influence on our society as well as future generations should make use of their platforms and take these opportunities to address important issues, such as the health and care of our Earth. As the video has brought smiles to the faces of many fans, it has also used some of today's most influential people to show how every action we take has an effect on the world around us and how we should love and care for our planet. The timing of the song's release, as well as the message sent to viewers all over the world ultimately conveyed an important concept in a light-hearted way. There is no doubt that the lyrics, "We love the Earth. It is our planet. We love the Earth. It is our home," will be stuck in our heads for days, if not months to come.
